The IP Grade

What does IP stand for?

IP stands for In Progress. It is a grade that a student in a computer-assisted MTH 090 class can receive instead of an S or a U.

How does the IP grade differ from a grade of S or U?

A student who receives a grade of S in MTH 090 is eligible to enroll in a MTH 098 class the next semester. A student who receives a grade of U in MTH 090 must repeat MTH 090 and start with the material at the beginning of the course. A student who receives a grade of IP must repeat MTH 090, but he or she can start at the point at which he left off in the previous semester.

What are the eligibility requirements for receiving a grade of IP?

• The IP grade is given only by permission of the MTH 090 instructor.
• The student must enroll in a computer-assisted MTH 090 class in the next semester to complete course material; otherwise the IP grade is automatically changed to U and the student must start again from the beginning.
• The student must be making reasonable progress. Some of the criteria used to define reasonable progress include the following:
1. The student must have completed the first two tests with grades of 75 or greater or with an overall test average of 75 and no test grade lower than 60.
2. The student must have an overall quiz average of 80.
3. The student must have no more than one unexcused absence.

• The student must maintain regular communication with the MTH 090 instructor.
• A student who takes the final examination may not receive a grade of IP.

What should a student do if he or she wishes to receive a grade of IP?

A student who does not feel he or she will successfully complete all of the material in MTH 090 by the end of the semester should speak to his or her instructor to determine if the student may be eligible to receive a grade of IP.

What are the financial implications of receiving a grade of IP?

A student who receives a grade of IP and subsequently registers for a MTH 090 computer-assisted course the next semester is required to pay for the course. If the student receives Federal Financial Aid, financial aid funds may be applied subject to regular guidelines.
